Malacañang on Friday shot back at opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, who criticized President Rodrigo Duterte for taking a nap as world leaders held meetings during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Singapore this week.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement that accusation that Duterte was lazy or seriously ill to perform his functions as chief executive just because he had to take power naps to catch up on sleep was “a product of a witless, if not a malicious mind.”

Panelo earlier explained that Duterte had to miss some of the ASEAN events because the 73-year-old chief executive had to take a rest after dealing with a punishing schedule.

Trillanes, Duterte’s fiercest critic, said the President’s naps can either be indicators of his health condition or supposed laziness, noting that it’s a “big problem” for the Philippines.

Panelo also noted that Duterte was not only the world leader who missed some of the meetings.

“Their absence in those meetings did not make them lazy or seriously ill to perform their duties as Presidents of the their respective countries,” he said.

Panelo said in criticizing Duterte anew, Trillanes just wanted to “call attention to himself.”

“Unlike Senator Trillanes, who used the Senate as his sleeping quarters for a week without paying for his boarding just to escape from his concocted and imagined arrest, the country is getting its money’s worth by the President’s selfless dedication to his constitutional duty of serving and protecting the people,” Panelo said.
