‘Be honest, competent’- Duterte to those wanting to join gov’t
President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday said he only expects two things from those who intend to join the government, following the end of the filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) for the May 2019 midterm elections.
“My criteria is you must be honest and you must be competent. That’s it. If you can handle the job and if you are a decent person,” the President said in Bisaya during a speech in Davao City.
Duterte reiterated his long-lived reminder that he will not tolerate corruption under his administration.
“You accepted me but I need to tell you that if we do not have the law and order in this country, if the corrupt will never stop, ah then there’s nothing. We would all be dead,” he said.
The President also painted a grim picture for government officials who would be found to be involved in the illegal drug trade.
“I’m just warning you because my promise to you was corruption, drugs. Do you remember? If it’s about drugs, the Human Rights are listening,” Duterte said.
“You druggists especially the importers… There’s no laboratory here because they know I will really kill them,” he added.

On a lighter note, the President spoke encouraging words for those who are lagging in school grades, saying several of his Cabinet Secretaries were “bright” and did well in school, whereas their boss only settled for a passing grade of “75.”
“All of them were valedictorians while I only had 75. But who’s their boss now?” Is it the valedictorian? The 75,” Duterte said in Bisaya, drawing laughter and applause from the audience.
“So don’t be in a rush. Simply buckle down throughout everyday life,” he included.
The “valedictorians” Duterte was alluding incorporate Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, Finance Secretary Carlos “Sonny” Dominguez, and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.
