President Rodrigo Roa Duterte still believes that China will keep its promise not to build any structure in the contested Scarborough Shoal. This is the president’s statement on his arrival from his two-day working visit in Japan.
According to the President, “China has put it on record that near Pag-asa where we also have our… the Scarborough Island, China has committed to us not to build anything there and I hope that they would honor that commitment to us.”
On his recent visit in Japan, Duterte had talks with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe regarding the maritime security and free navigation in South China Sea.
The president added, he is hoping that there will not be an issue with the recent talks that can hamper the relationship with countries involve.
Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Zhao Jianhua already gave an assurance to Duterte that they will not put any infrastructure in Sandy Cay (Scarborough Shoal).
It can be remembered that the ruling of Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, Netherlands was favored for the Philippines when the later filed complaint on China’s aggression on South China Sea.
There was a time that Filipino fishermen were banned fishing in these shores–chased by Chinese coast guards in their own territory.
But with the stability of the new governance of President Duterte, a strong tie binds the relationship of the Philippines and China.
